International Student Guide to Melbourne - help!!

Hi guys and girls,

I'm the Editor of Insider Publishing and we are in the process of putting together a free, international student guide to Melbourne in 2010.

I was just wondering if someone could help me work out where the best rock climbing is in Victoria for beginners. We have about 60-70 words to discuss this so not much at all. I just want to know some good places to recommend to new students and where to get all right gear.

If anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it!

Cheers
James

Cape Woolamai is a good place to start followed by Taipan Wall.

The best thing for international students in Melbourne to do is book a beginners learn to climb course at Araps for a weekend or longer. Simey, Wendy and many others on this forum teach climbing to beginners. It would be a great introduction to Australia.

There is a climbing gym in Swanston St very close to RMIT and Melbourne University, plus many of the colleges that teach English. It's a bit ordinary compared to the other climbing gyms but beginners tend not to know the difference.

I think simey's advice is good.. Taipan Wall, you can catch a bus there from Southern Cross Station.

Gear:

Cliffhanger Climbing gym (cnr Grieve pde and doherty's Rd Altona) has a good gear shop.
Bogong Equipment (Little Bourke st, City) is the best place for climbing gear in the city.

BTW: All climbing gyms hire out harnesses and shoes.

Climbing outdoors:

Mt Arapiles, near Horsham, has the best climbing for beginners (and everyone else), has a good gear shop and many climbing instructors/guides.
Beginner climbers should learn from a professional instructor or join a club. Most universities have climbing clubs.

Disclosure: Used to work at Bogong.

Sending all the International students to Arapiles to meet Simey might help him 'improve' his mood outside the usual influx at uni holidays?

The VCC often run beginners trips. There is also some other useful info on the FAQ page re gyms and how to get into climbing etc. http://www.vicclimb.org.au/index.php?location=contact
