I'm the Editor of Insider Publishing and we are in the process of putting together a free, international student guide to Melbourne in 2010.
I was just wondering if someone could help me work out where the best rock climbing is in Victoria for beginners. We have about 60-70 words to discuss this so not much at all. I just want to know some good places to recommend to new students and where to get all right gear.
If anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it!
The best thing for international students in Melbourne to do is book a beginners learn to climb course at Araps for a weekend or longer. Simey, Wendy and many others on this forum teach climbing to beginners. It would be a great introduction to Australia.
There is a climbing gym in Swanston St very close to RMIT and Melbourne University, plus many of the colleges that teach English. It's a bit ordinary compared to the other climbing gyms but beginners tend not to know the difference.

Cliffhanger Climbing gym (cnr Grieve pde and doherty's Rd Altona) has a good gear shop.
Bogong Equipment (Little Bourke st, City) is the best place for climbing gear in the city.
BTW: All climbing gyms hire out harnesses and shoes.
Climbing outdoors:
Mt Arapiles, near Horsham, has the best climbing for beginners (and everyone else), has a good gear shop and many climbing instructors/guides.
Beginner climbers should learn from a professional instructor or join a club. Most universities have climbing clubs.
