Winter training for summer rock climbing

In colder climates, for example Canada, indoor climbing during the winter will give you that edge needed for summer 5.12+ climbing. This is a sample of my winter training regime. Here in Alberta you are pretty well guaranteed 8 months of snow before the regular climbing season begins. Don’t get me wrong, you can slip in some days here and there during Chinooks, but they are inconsistent and irregular. This training regime works great for me; my first climbs of the year are often in the 12c range (on good days this includes onsites!). I am by no means a naturally good climber. I only accomplish these grades with hard work. Enough about me, this article is a no nonsense guide to climbing better than you have ever climbed.

worst training schedule ever! Summer is for parties, autumn is for getting strong again, winter is for sending them ming'n hard boulder problems, spring is for the route climbing with the ropes and the belays and such, then its time to party again through summer!

Each to their own I guess. But I prefer to train for physical strength in the off season and have fun giving err during the climbing season.

Fishing for some google ads revenue?
A little bit of shameless self-promotion is ok, but how many forums did you post this on?

@kevinsaddictions: a fine winter day often offers the best conditions in australia, and summer is WAAY too hot to do much climbing. thanks for the post though, it's still useful

Yeah, what is this 'summer climbing' you speak of? Summer is canyon season, everyone knows that.

Cycling all year round = training for mountains
Indoors = training for outdoors all year round

Off season? No such thing, only a lack of time.

I wish I could climb all year round. Australia sounds like a great place to climb. My friends have been to Arapiles a few times and I now they always have a great time. As a matter of fact my friends Dave and Thu are there right now.

@egosan Google adsens doesn’t make money. I have only made 2 dollars in four months. I just want to share my experience with people. I have put a lot of effort into training and climbing over the years and hope this information is helpfull to others. I have come to realize that are prime climbing years fade into the past and I wish to anchor something dawn and make it permanent. On that note if your just starting or still have a lot of time left get out there and climb your ass off.
