Hi Guys,
Coming down to Araps in Nov, unfortunately have to bring work with me (puke!). Can anyone give advice on what Telstra 3G reception is like from the campgrounds please?

I have had to work from my 3G modem at the Pines. Reception is fine. The repeater
tower is on top of Mt.Arapiles. That said, during inclement weather I have struggled to
maintain a connection. Good luck getting anything done. The lure of the rock is strong.

Sweet, thanks for the info... Yes I am skeptical about my abilities to concentrate while there is a big lump of sweet rock a couple of hundred metres away.
Cheer,
Scott

Hang on what? There's 3G at Arapiles but nowhere in Horsham? How does that work?

I've never had an issue with 3G in Horsham. Spent a hour or two sitting in the emergency waiting room reading chockstone and the like...

Telsta Next G is the undisputed king of cell phone coverage. Ive never seen loss of reception on my mates phones other than very rarely when tucked in some obscure gullies. Vodafone (3G) is awful and doesnt get any reception after leaving Horsham. I currently have Optus (3G) which has seemed pretty good.
I also need to do some minor work while on an upcoming extended stay and will be hoping my Optus internet dongle works. Well, that is of course if I find a replacement for my laptop which got nicked last week :(

Telstra 3G, not Optus.

Doesn't Vodaphone use the Optus network?

I think so. http://www.mobilecomms-technology.com/projects/vodafone/

Strange. Vodafone definately does not work, I have tried to use it many numerous times. Then I went in and got my vodafone sim upgraded to 3G. Still it did not work. Then I purchased an Optus prepaid sim. Using the same phone I took out the vodafone sim, put in the optus, and hey presto I could make calls.

Maybe Optus has an arrangement to fall back to Telstra when the Optus network is unavailable? 3 used to do that with Telstra I think...

i don't think so - i can't use my optus phone when people with telstra as getting full reception.

no - was just referring to in general - no specifically to Araps!

Optus 3G (on iPhone) is definitely a no-go in Horsham or anywhere around the Grampians. Slow old 2G does work at various Grampians crags, and also in Horsham. Edit: note I'm specifically talking about internet access. You don't need 3G to make calls. Optus phone reception is reasonably good in the Gramps.

3 do that and still do that on Telstra's older GSM network. 3 only has its own infrastructure in the major cities. Anywhere outside it just roams on 2G.

Voda shares SOME cells with optus.
3 (hutchison) roams to telstra for now. As Patto said, they only have cells in big cities.
voda and hutch (3) just merged and so will probably merge at a retail level soon??next few years???
Telstra has the biggest coverage area by far but are most expensive usually
Voda has the worst coverage area by far and are focusing on bandwidth in capital cities (hence getting hold of hutch) Don't expect a rural rollout any time soon.
Optus is somewhere in between (prob closer to telstra than voda in coverage area)
Different networks can share the same tower but still have separate gear on that tower...blah blah blah...I could go on but it might get boring...
