You guessed it.. Andrew Lock. Just announced today...

First couple of paragraphs from my report below. Interested in what you guys think ...
---------
Mountaineer Andrew Lock has been honored by the Australian Geographic Society as the 2009 Australian Adventurer of the Year.

On Friday 2 October 2009 Lock stood on the summit of Tibet’s Mt Shishapangma making him just the 18th person in the world to climb all the Earth’s 8000+ meter peaks and the first Australian to ever join this exclusive group of mountaineering’s super elite. It puts Lock in a group almost as exclusive as the 12 men to ever stand on the surface of the moon. Yet this awesome moment of Australian achievement has so far been at risk of passing practically unnoticed by mainstream media and, as a result, the public at large.

Umm.....could it have been anyone else?

I think it was pretty much a giiven that it would go to Andrew.

Where there any other nominees? Your article didn't mention that.

Well I'm not surprised Andrew Lock's achievements got overlooked by the mainstream media given that it coincided with Brendan Fevola getting really drunk at the Brownlow Medal Count. Obviously the Fev is a much bigger story.

If Andrew Lock had summitted and then taken a photo of himself with his todger out, he would have recieved more recognition from the mainstream media.

That generally works.

As we all know, the mainstream media is in the business of appealling to the lowest common denominator. I seriously doubt that as many people would have bought the tabloids if a photo of a guy in an unflattering down suit on the summit of some snowy peak was to replace an image of a brash, overpaid, twenty-something falling from grace. The world loves to see a tall poppy wilt.

Speaking of lowest common demoninator........How did Andrew Linblade go with sportsperson of the year when he snagged the golden ice axe? It seems the mountaineering world thought that new routing up a mega wall in the Himalayas was more impressive than following the well beaten path up an arbitrarily cut off bunch of giant snow piles. When a thousand people have done the "big 14" will it still be news?

I think I'd rather read about footy boofheads doing their thing!
