I agree with ithomas "The real problem is with captions and citations not the image."

I'm a photojournalist (using images to tell the truth) and an advertising photographer (using images to
lie). When publishing an image the context should be considered. If the viewers are expecting to see
an image that represents a given time and place then an image that deviates from this should be
captioned as such.

Within the news/photojournalism industry any digital adjustments to an image that could be done within
a darkroom are not considered manipulation and are considered OK for news/ journalism/ sports
images. This includes darkening or lightening areas of an image, altering contrast or changing
saturation.

It is impossible for photographers to capture most actual first ascents. (Anyone want to hang off a
cliff for a year?) If the image is a repeat ascent for the camera perhaps the caption could just read
something like 'Climber, first ascentionist, on Route'

Sometimes landscapes/ cliffs can look better in photographs than when we see them without any real
manipulation occurring. This is thanks to beautiful early light, good composition and photographic
technical mastery!
