Planning Alpine National Parks

Hi, I work at Parks Victoria and we’re just starting the review of the Victorian Alpine National Parks management plan. The area due for review includes the Alpine, Baw Baw, Mount Buffalo, Errinundra and Snowy River national parks.

As real park users I thought you’d be interested in the blog we've just started to let people know what we’re doing. Once a table on contents and base info has been developed we’ll add a Wiki so any interested people can start editing and help us understand what they want from the parks.

It is time to take a fresh approach to park planning so join us at weplan.parks.vic.gov.au

Cheers
Stacy
(and give me yell if you register on the site to tell me what you think, it’s very early days so feedback is really appreciated)

Welcome Stacy.

Great to see a proactive approach actually asking for feedback from the park users themselves. Very commendable!

All the best Martin

I echo dalai comment above.

How do you protect the integrity of your database if others can edit it?

I look forward to adding constructive comment as a park user to your site. Thank you for the opportunity.

G'day all

The Alpine plan is now up on the website and you can register and start writing - editing the plan. It includes Mt Buffalo so probably worth having a look at.

Bump ...

I registered for this ages ago then found it outrageously tedious to find where to contribute too and forgot about it. But today I've had a bit more success and it looks like we could start something here

There's a tiny bit about climbing in here which is notable for having memorandums of cooperations with a bunch of other user groups, but not climbers and also interestingly enough, thinking that dog walking is a nature based activity strongly focused on the natural setting whilst climbing is more about the activity!

Please dive in ... I'll get around to it later today when I need an excuse to procrastinate.

You are right Wendy, the WePlan site is a bit convoluted. However, this is the first time Parks Victoria have used this medium to attract public contributions to what is an important chapter in the current planning process of the Greater Alpine National Parks. Rockclimbers may be affected by decisions taken in this planning process and I urge anyone with an opinion to contribute to the WePlan site. The area of major concern to climbers is obviously Mt Buffalo. However, there are also other climbing areas that are encompassed within the proposed new boundaries of the Greater Alpine National Park. Mt Erica Rocks in the Baw Baw area and many of the wilder East Gippsland cliffs such as Little River Gorge and the Cobberas are of interest to some. I'm actually a member of the Alpine Advisory Committee and am representing the interests of recreational users (which includes climbers!).

It's naff to try and add to as well. I went into here then scrolled down to the end of the page where there's a things saying EDIT and that opens the whole thread, including everyone else's posts (so you could insert rude comments into any you disagree with - seems pretty bodgy as I can't see anything stopping someone from modifying what you wrote), scroll down to the end of that and type away. You have to cut and past your signature from the thingy under the window into the text too.

If you've got any better ideas of how we can contribute to it or what bits we should add to, Glen, that'd be great. Glad your on the committee too.

Hi All,

I will be looking at putting a Memorandum of Cooperation together for climbing in the Alpine Parks. Any thoughts, ideas people have, please feel free to send them to me or post feedback here. Everyone will have the opportunity to view it before submission.

And as fiddly as it is, if you can work out your way to posting on the WePlan site as well it is a great way of having a more public voice. With all the various plans and advisory boards now, I think the days of climbing just bubbling along under the radar for the most part are over. Same parks, more user groups, more people - if we don't have a voice - the outcomes are pretty obvious. I am guilty of getting frustrated with the site also. Registered with it a long time ago but everytime I go to do something it takes more time than I have. Rule here Tracey - don't sit down to post when you only have 5 minutes.

Cheers,

Tracey

Go for all parks - not just the alps.

Here is a link to a copy of the MOU with Bushwalking Victoria for an example of what they look like.

X-link to feedback I received from Stacey regarding the difficulty / non user-friendliness, of trying to post on the Parks Vic site.

I just received an email about the public consultations held re ANP which you can read here

You may note the complete absence of climbing in it. Fairly typical is "Of recreation use, the management of bushwalking, general accessibility to the parks, deer hunting, camping, fishing and snow based activities were identified the most." The deer hunters on the other hand were so proactive that hunting was the second most valued experience in the parks after "visitor experience".

I did send them an email ages ago regarding how horrendous the site was to use and if they had any suggestions on how we could better use it, but no response.

I noted the same. ~> A bit disappointing considering the response to climbing in Sydney Harbour Nat. Parks by comparison...
