I find take and safe almost useless... I tend to just pay attention to what the leader and the rope is doing, anything else is a bonus. Rope signals are great. If you've agreed on something before hand, when verbal/visual communication is impossible, you'll be glad you did... I realized after i climbed with a couple of deaf guys just how much useless crap we waffle on while climbing. Communication isn't always verbal... a simple death stare after your belayer short ropes you during a desperate clip can scream a million insults at them :P When climbing with a new partner, discuss such things BEFORE you leave the ground. Never assume everyone uses the same systems as you and your regular climbing buddies do...
