Hi, I am moving to Australia next year and I have to choose if I want to live in Syndey or Melbourne. Any advise which city is better for climbing both outdoor and indoor? I like bouldering and routes with leading. Which city has better indoor walls and is close to good rocks for outdoor climbing? Many thanks for hepl

It depends on how far you are prepared to travel.

Sydney has better local crags (Blue mtns within 1.5 hours, some crags in the suburbs)

Melbourne has better crags within a 4 hour drive (Mt Buffalo, Mt Arapiles, The Grampians).

Not familiar with the indoor climbing in Sydney.

I think you'll find accomodation more expensive in Sydney, which is not to say Melbourne is cheap.

I'd say, if you want to do sport climbing day trips, live in Sydney. If you live in Melbourne there are opportunities to do sport climbing within 2 hours, but they are nowhere near as good. If you like trad more than sport, definitely live in Melbourne.

Of course there are a lot of other factors but from the climbing point of view, that's about it.

If you want a wealth of excellent local bouldering within a short drive move to Sydney.

Sydney has lots of good bouldering and there are indoor gyms all over the place. Lots of the crags in the Blue Mountains are easy to get to by public transport, so if you don't have a car, it doesn't matter that much.

It also has pretty good beaches for when it's too hot to climb.

Canyoning in the Blue \Mountains is excellent too, if you are into that sort of thing.
