I am wondering if anyone has any information, experience or opinions about auto belay devices (top rope -
climbing gym style), other than the information that is available with a google search.
I am researching the feasibility of incorporating some sort of auto device into the climbing facility I am
involved in. Any information or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

i trialled one of those big ol inertia reels for a sydney climbing gym a while back and thought it would be fantastic for running laps & so convenient cus you dont have to source a partner or do belay duties :)
you'd want to have it on a decent height wall though.
all in all, greaat but very expensive (several thou from vague memory!!) so maybe trial it in the gym & get feedback from the regulars on whether its really worth the outlay

They used to have one at the Westway in London until it seemed to drop someone on the floor recently. There is a quite a long thread on UKclimbing about it if you are interested. It gives the name of the manufacturer as well.
It got pretty regular but not intensive use. I never had to queue to use it.

Probably nothing would stop someone from hogging the autobelay rope. From what I can gather, though, is that once you fall you come down straight away, so you could hardly dog a route. And what stops a pair from hogging a rope at a gym all night anyway?
