I climbed Mt. Kinabalu in 1990. It's the Ayres Rock of Asia. Every rich asian touris is there with guides. There is a very expensive restaurant / hotel half way up which is serviced by a helicopter to this position.
I was there as part of a 3 month posting with the Army and this looked fun to do. The bulk is only a really a stomp, but it is interesting to see all the flora change as you get higher and higher. The aim is to summit as the sun is rising so you must plan and book the little wooden huts which are about ( fading memory ) 1hrs walk to the summit. This way, you leave your main pack locked away and finish relativly easily. There is this monster handrail which follows the path from these huts to the summit so the Japanese grandma's have something to hold on to.
The sunrise is incredible and worth the walk. We did a little climbing around the area but it was mainly slabs with run out natural gear.
This is the highest mountain in Sth EastAsia and stands at 4101m ( 13,455 ft ). It is known as Lows Peak.
