I think people who talk about elite climbers who smoke, should remember that there are young people who read this forum, and might be influenced by your comments. I think you need to remember that many European climbers have better access to climbing areas, more community support, more sponsors, and climb more often and therefore are more likely to climb hard. It is amazing just how many Europeans smoke (and their smoking habits don’t seem to be influenced by their socio-economic backgrounds or education) so it is logical that there are many European climbers who smoke.
Whilst there may not be any studies linking climbing performance to smoking, there are some which have investigated the effects of smoking on athletes.
Here are some FACTS about smoking.
Smoking has negative effects on lung function and aerobic capacity, and the more one smokes the greater that effect is.
Smoking prolongs recuperation times after physical activity.
Smokers get fatigued earlier than non-smokers.
Muscle strength and flexibility of certain group of muscles is significantly decreased in cigarette smoking athletes

Smoking does affect climbing performance in every case – if those elite climbers didn’t smoke they would be sending even harder grades. That's what available EVIDENCE shows. If you disagree, set up your own randomised controlled trials and stop using anecdotal evidence as facts.
