Whats happened to chocky?

We all know that things change over time, but something has definately happened here. This used to be a place were there was always something interesting to read, with quite a light harted tilt to it all.
There are a lot of people who used to be very active, who we don't see anymore. Why is this?
Is it because there doesn't seem to be interesting topics or discussions?
Maybe Mod has been to heavy handed?
Has a whole bunch of people retired from the sport or moved or died or something?
Maybe people have been scared off by rude or over opinionated people who know nothing?

Hmm, these are all just questions? Who Knows? Not I, but I know that this place hasn't been as fun as it used to....

Like all forums - the standard debates get done to death. Once views have been aired the discussion
sort of dies. Most of the main heated debates have been covered in the last 3 years (ie retrobolting,
chipping, trad vs sport etc ect)

>Maybe Mod has been to heavy handed?

There is almost no modding done on this forum. I would delete possibly one topic every two weeks -
and this will be blatent spam or pathetic attempts at abusing people. Occasionally the definition of
spam issue has got out of hand - but that just made for entertaining debates!

>Has a whole bunch of people retired from the sport or moved or died or

nope. for some the attraction of web forums is short lived.

>Maybe people have been scared off by rude or over opinionated people who

who me? ;-)

You can only make it fun if you make an effort to entertain! Write up a trip report, post some reviews,
bring up a bizzare topic. Get pro-active!

It appears to be very cyclic - some weeks/months posts galore, others like this week you could almost hear a pin drop in the cyberspace of chockstone (other than the World climbing book competition which consists of a lot of posts but not much content).

As Neil suggests also many topics have been covered to death. How many times now when topics come around again people are just directed to the search function rather then rehash the same old comments.

Not me. I haven't had to do any moderating - Neil always beats me to it. ;-)

Possibly! The 'joys' of the internet forum.

It is about making a contribution as well as reading. Checking your user stats Shaggy, your post count has dropped considerably from your 'heydays' of late 2004. If you want to it to be something like it was we all need to contribute otherwise you are only constantly reading the views and opinions of a few which gets boring quickly.

understand the feeling of this thread.
A lot of us are joiners rather than initiators. Will add our 2c worth to a discussion, but don't start our own.
Some like me haven't climbed anything for months, while others will be busy climbing.
I'll just start a thread now, OK?

Ive run out of things to say! I generally dont bother posting just for the sake of posting, so can be a bit quiet if there are no interesting topics.

Ive been sitting on a half finished Mt Arapiles trip report for abut six months, I might just post it, as I dont think im going to finish it at this rate.

I thought we should start a chockstone dating forum topic!!!! That ought to liven things up a little (of course I only have my own interests at heart) :) but have had reoccurring nightmares of getting kicked of chockstone by Neil-eek really scary!!!! What would I do all day at work-I might have to do WORK!!!! As a relatively new climber I find chockstone a fantastic resource but don't have a lot of experience to add to forum threads-though I do add my 2c of bollocks every now and then :)

Climbers seriously hurting themselves seems to increase forum activity any volunteers?

This reminds me of that Monty Python scene where the couple who've run out of conversation buy one at a restaurant.

Here's a little tit bit... I had a crack at that 17 at Weeribee Gorge recently. The one at the end of the catwalk. Wide crack. Too wide to jam, to narrow to chimney. Looked bloody impressive from the ground, at least by Weeribee standards. Anyway, 17 my arse! I'd accept 20 at least. Got 3/4rds of the way up okay with nice rest stances, then suddenly it was seriously pumpy with no let up.

The one big cam I had was on tips and the crack just got wider above. I knew I could probably get a fair way by laybacking, but I'd need to rest before long, and without any pro or stances that could lead to bigger fall than I was prepared to accepted. So I grabbed the one big cam below me and repositioned it higher. Laid back into a couple of moves... now what? Still no where to rest. Chicken wing it? Getting pumped silly now. Reach down, pluck out the cam and move it up. Thrash up a few more inches, half kind of jammed in now, at least my arms are. Feet on nothing but smoothness. Shit that cam's gonna wobble out! No pro below for a looooong way. .......Back down we go, dog it, rest up.

The remainder turned into a full on aid session. Silver jugging mere centimeters at a time. All of this just to win the last few feet to the top. I finally flopped over the brim so worked I couldn't grip the rope for a while.

I highly recommend this "17" for anyone wanting a workout.

PS: I'll be at Araps this weekend, if anyone wants to join me. Doing easy stuff.
