Storms this arvo in Vic

1:32:45 PM
Just came across this off BOM. Anyone seen/heard of it coming through yet? We've got a similar warning in the ACT (BOM are not shy in releasing them) with reports of hail and electrical storms in Southern ACT. I'm impressed at how descriptive (and alarming!) the warning below is

On 20/01/05 BOM wrote:

for Damaging Wind Gusts, Large Hailstones and Very Heavy Rainfall
For people in the Northern Country, Alpine, Northeastern, North Central, and
Gippsland Districts.
Issued at 12:55 pm EDT on Thursday 20 January 2005

Thunderstorms are still being observed over eastern parts of Victoria,
particularly in the Northeast and storms are likely to persist through eastern
Victoria through the afternoon. Radar observations suggest that some of these
thunderstorms have the potential to produce heavy rainfall with damaging wind
gusts and large hail also a possibility.

In the interests of community safety the SES suggests some simple precautions:
- Secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home, then:
- Stay indoors if possible
- If you are outdoors, avoid sheltering under trees
- Listen to the radio station for the storm updates
- Switch off computers and electrical appliances
- Do not drive vehicles through flooded areas

The next warning is due to be issued by 3.30 pm Thursday

This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's
website at or call 1300 659 217.The Bureau and State Emergency
Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.

golf ball size hail at Cobram at 9.30am

No hail in Albury, some gusty winds(nothing too strong), and a bit over 2 inches of rain today.
The sun started showing itself a bit before 7pm. and is still partial at 7:41pm.

If you want a good indiction if it going to rain soon on your crag keep an eye on the BOM radar images. I have found them to be pretty acurate. They don't cover all areas however

Yeh the BOM radar images are excellent, I was tracking the storms moving over the ACT yesterday afternoon. The radar was spot on with what was hapenning outside

is a neat "how to" weather forecasting module
