overnight spots on roadtrips

G'day,
heading down to Araps from the Blueies and looking for some info...
We always do the leave after work drive, and usually end up getting tired somewhere 2 hours either side of Albury. What follows is driving around looking for the non-rapiest spot, only to be kept awake by trucks all night..

Any one willing to share their favourite places to stop and put up a tent near the Hume around 4-6 hours south of Sydney?? Not super keen on the whole 'sleep on a picnic table in a rest stop thing', rather looking for state or national parks within 20 mins of the highway...

Hey, Wingello is no more than 20min off the Hume, only about 3hr south of sydney though. Big campsite, like Bungleboori without the rape/trash

Hume Dam near Albury is good, although only really a picnic spot it's nice and quiet + not too far from the highway. Although I did wake up one night nose to nose with a fox - we both shat ourselves.
The west side of Lake Mokoan near Wangaratta is a good quiet spot too.

3 hours? How slow do you go?
Maybe from Katoomba, from Sydney its little more then 2 hrs to Wingello. . .
And you want to get further then that - at least to Yass or Gundagai . . .

Then just follow your nose - Along the river at Gundagai, or theres forest a bit further south . . .
Or head west via Wagga then head to The Rock . . .

Or swing drives and just punch it to the chains . .

PS Spots are enjoyable at any time imho . . .

Jugiong go off the hume and take 1st left opposite motel to bank of mururmbidgee second left takes you over the bridge. After violet town vitually no trucks just go down one of the cross rds that are every mile or so

Plenty of good spots on the Murray.....i think i've stopped off in Yarrawonga on the way back from Araps.

It probably doesn’t need to be said, but stay well clear of public toilets. I crashed in my swag in a Rotunda on the banks of the Murray once (Yarrawonga I think) at what, in my inebriated state, looked like a nice spot, but failed to notice the nearby amenities. I was awoken by some shifty looking dude asking me if I’d seen his daughter. When I asked what she looked like (still not grasping the situation fully) he wasn't sure…”about 10…I think…” He lurked around for a bit, then wandered off. I figured one of two things would happen – he’d either leave me alone, or go get his deviant mates and come back. Luckily I had a rather large machete in the car, so I slept with that under my pillow.
I also met some interesting characters whilst sleeping in the Rotunda in Nowra once.
I don’t sleep in Rotundas any more.

When I'm heading from Horsham to Mount Buffalo at want to break the drive over two days, I stop at Greens Lake in Corop, about 45 minutes West of Shepparton. Greens Lake is quite popular with the petrol burning crowd so on long weekends it can be quite busy. If you drive more than 500m further down the road from the toilets it gets pretty quiet though. Other than the toilet block, there's no facilities. The lake's pretty and the ground is pretty flat.

Heading via Shep is slightly longer than the some other routes, but for me it works well. Might be a little further from Sydney than you want to drive though.

I am not sure but the talk was Green Lake was going to be closed due to the number of callouts to police re bad behaviour drinking etc Many good spots to camp along the colibinabin Murchison rd beside the waranga canal or the old rail easement around rushworth with Rushworth forest just to the south and waranga basin (lake ) to the north . Instead of crossing the railway at murchison east go just past the railway station . train around 7 am

How's about going the west way ie from Katoomba through cowra, west wyalong, hay, swan hill and Horsham...
Anyone camped at Jimberoo state forest near Rankin Springs, looks like the only bit of green on the map if driving the west way...

There's a free camping area frequented by grey nomads just outside of Hay. I think it was signposted even. Heading from Sydney, it's at the far side of town, almost the last rd on the right, then left down a dirt road.

be careful about roos in central nsw but the section from violet town west is pretty heavily infested with them also . the hume has many carcasses but a bigger volume of traffic scares them off a bit . hit at 100 kmph a roo can well write off your car !!!

A work colleague's Grandad out at Wagga hit two horses coming around a bend (they'd escaped their paddock) and spent 6 weeks flat on his back in ICU; another 6 months not able to Ballroom dance - which was his particular thing apparently.
Pretty sure the horses went to petfood...

Just gotta drive defensive & keep your fingers crossed.

Emus between Hay and Moulanine arent especially streetwise either. Never hit any though....I have roos where I live and sometimes they bump into the side when I have stopped!!!

Depending which way you go.
1. Rankin springs has some fantastic spots just off the main road towards Griffith.
2. Other way. Next to the river in euroa
