Suspicious Characters

Had a great day at Araps today but an encounter with a couple of guy's in the late arvo was a bit suss. We had a first timer in the group and finished our day top roping a few climbs at dec crag. While our group was on the crag helping the bumbly set his first top ropes a couple of guys appeared below cruising round. I thought they were just scouting the crag and waved to them and got on with the task in hand until one of the guy's asked "how would you go if we grabbed all your gear" (3 bags). I thought they were joking (maybe they were) and laughed and said how good and trustworthy people are at the mount. The guy's talked to each other, looked at our gear and then left in a 4wd ute thankfully leaving our gear behind. It was a weird encounter and we all feel lucky we didnt loose anything. I know there have been bags grabbed before at the mount while climbers are on rope and in the future I might hide my stuff from general view.

A "Remington" or "Winchester" sticker on your car will ensure that no-one touches your stuff.

Firearms aren't allowed in the park... is there a particular brand of mallet that's well known?

Report to police - might be known to them if you can give a reasonable description. - Do it soon.

at about what time was this? as we drove away at around 4:30, we saw a group of people - about 5 of them, hanging around near the bins with their car. They didn't at all look like climbers (refer to the climbing look) and also had a suspicious look about them.

Officer, they looked suspicious to me... but not in the same way climbers do if you know what I mean.

Anybody seen at Araps apart from grey nomads and suspicious unkempt looking characters are suspicious.

Why is this not getting deleted by mods??

This sort of crap really irks me. Clearly they were joking as they didn't take anything.

Really, you felt lucky that they didn't take your stuff? Lucky? Maybe if they had machine guns I would consider you lucky, but a question and a few glances?? Hardly the stuff to be thankful to lady luck for.

Maybe hide your stuff next time?? Power to ya, great idea.

Take a chill pill shortman. There was a few instances of theft some time back of gear at the base of climbs whilst the climbers were on rope. I don't want to hear of that happening again. In hindsight it's not wise to leave our packs in clear view and I wont be doing that again.
"Clearly they were joking" I don't know about that but hey maybe you know more than me. It's hard to sum up in words but what was said, the way it was said and the general body language made me feel very uneasy and the guys I was with all felt the same. I hope they we're just joking and my mates and I are just a group of paranoid bumblies.

On what basis should we be deleting this?? This seems like a perfectly reasonable public service announcement. I've had gear stolen from cars at various climbing areas around Australia, so this seems a legit worry. I've also seen 'Sham bogan locals in utes do such stupid things as destroy the Telstra phone box.

If i really didnt feel it was a joke I would of abseiled to the ground and defended my belongings. As Heraclitis said " war is common to all and in strife there is justice"

While I'd be surprised if these guys were up to anything (even the dumbest bogan crim doesn't deliberately alert the potential target ) I don't see any reason for the mods to delete the post. It's just a report of an incident that seemed significant to the OP. No-one's identifiable/slandered etc. People can make up their own minds about what the whole thing signified. I tend to think the guys in the 4WD were pointing out in a semi-humorous way out that the gear was a bit too visible and accessible. But I wasn't there.

That perhaps these same guys may have been acting suspicious around others as well - and as someone else pointed out, gear has gone missing at Araps recently.

And people of a similar description were seen casing a local residence.

Take photos.
