On some of the climbs at Araps we noticed a pee smell. We thought it just must've been people relieving themselves on some of the climbs. Then someone told us it was snake pee...someone else said bat pee and that snake pee doesn't smell?
Does anyone know? I've tried to do some research but to no avail, I'm very curious about this now!

I've been pissed on by bat when caving and can confirm it smells.

You sure it wasn't a little dribble before the crux? Not that I would ever do that.

it could be mineral precipitate. water disolving minerals of the parent rock can seep from the wall along with a smell

Hmmm, you wouldn't be the first one that needed a change of jocks post crux but thats a way nastier smell than pee!

Location would give a clue. If it is at belay spots then there is a better than even chance that your first assumption was sadly right...
The serpent has traditionally been depicted as many things, but this is the first time I have ever heard of them being accused of this!

Roosting locations can have a taint involved, but as a generalisation bat pee is not an issue in caves and I would be greatly surprised if it was more so on climbs.
Though histoplasmosis from guano can be a real issue ...

It could be old people. They often smell of pee. And trad dads are often old too.

That's no way to talk about simey or Eduardo. They really are quite harmless in the greater scheme of things even if their climbing has slacked off in recent years.
