Was pondering whether to post this yet as information is limited, but what the hey...

http://www.canberraclimbing.org.au/events--news/news/new-route-by-canberrans-on-mount-thor!.aspx

I don't know any more than what's here (well, apart from how they got down, but those who have been watching the forum will no doubt work this out quickly), but thought it was worth sharing this bit of inspiring news. Well done Chris, Chris and Nathan and I look forward to hearing more (and will post any updates I hear in due course).

Sounds like a fair effort. Nice work.

I am really pleased to hear of this adventure by Chris Warner, Chris Fitzgerald and Nathan Kuthakas; and I also look forward to hearing more detail when it comes to light.
Congratulations fellahs!

Hmm, 1200 m in 14 days.

(Excellent news update davidn).

I reckon the average speed on the descent might have been a smidge quicker ;)

Go lads!

Oh, and I suspect that the 150km walk-in is the total for all the loads ferried. I'm guessing (50km approach x 2 loads) + (1 x walking back to get the 2nd load)...........still rather epic.

A fine effort indeed. The approach is about 18 km so they probably humped 4 loads each which would give you +/-18 x 7. It doesn't work out exactly like that because you carry more to the halfway point and less all the way to the base. A soloist might carry 7 loads from Windy Lake at halfway, for example.
Thor is pretty bad ass to climb, some of the rock is pretty good, but never like El Cap, most isn't that great and sometimes you're pounding copperheads into kitty litter when its overhanging, snowing, at 3 AM. Tons of rockfall, the most in the entire valley. Twenty 60-70 meter pitches over really featureless rock will get you to the top and the last 1/3 of the wall is East side of El Cap steep. If you get hurt up there you're hosed.
Everybody should aim to visit here sometime even just to backpack or bag peaks, the place is an awesome hang in the summer.

They got in a little bit of trouble on the way down...since they paraglided off, their gear was thrown off the top...and was destroyed.

Then they were arrested, court case pending...

That's all your getting!

Three of the most down-to-earth high achievers (if that makes sense between the contradiction and double entrendre).

I find it incredibly bizzare that base jumping is so illegal that you can be arrested for it to the point of a court case?!

When I was there ten years ago it was totally the wild west - the nearest town is about 40km away and only has a population of a thousand or so. I can't imagine rangers or police staking the place out ready to arrest people. In fact the only rangers I ever saw in 2 months were in their little office in town.

I think they were paragliding (speedwings) not base jumping

You were there early season, Neil; there's quite a few backpackers in the peak of summer, usually around 3-400. There's almost always someone within sight of Thor in either direction. All it takes is one person seeing them flying, getting really excited about it and telling the next person they see and in two or three days every single person in town knows all about it. Also, Park Canada uses Auyuittuq as a "starter park" for wardens so you get these Dudley Dooright characters coming up there for 18 months that are gung ho about resume building and will bust you for anything that looks good for moving up the ladder.

According to Big John (Chris Fitzgerald is an employee of his), the route is called "Flaming Dinner Plates", 20 A3+ R. Chris has them spending 13 days on the wall to Chris Warner's 14, but 15 days in total committed to the climbing, and 27 km in/out carrying all the gear (around 6 times each presumably).

Anyone know what the final bureaucratic outcome was ?

Would be great to catch up with any of those gents again and hear of their adventure/s first hand...
