Climbing in Sydney Harbour National Park

Last year and/or earlier this year various Chockstoner viewers visited the NSW National Parks web forum site to comment on activities they thought should be permitted, or not, in Sydney Harbour National Park.

Those who registered on the original forum site with a genuine email address should have recently received an invitation to visit a new forum website to provide feedback about the online consultation process.

If you did not receive such an invitation the new forum site can be found at: http://sydneyharbourpom.net.au/feedback

The Parks Service is inviting people to “tell us whether the consultation adequately provided you with the opportunity to express your ideas and concerns about the Sydney Harbour National Park Plan of Management and whether online engagement is an effective way to consult with you.”

Visit their web forum and have your say!

Nice work on your comments, kuu. I also liked (*ahem*) this comment by one of the first respondents:

"I can think of a half a dozen good reasons why climbing is not appropriate in most parts of this park, but it is not obvious that there is nowhere where climbing would cause negligible damage nor endanger those below. I can understand their frustration about the blanket ban. I can also understand the natural inclination of the NPWS staff to avoid having the consider every cliff in the park for unsuitability for climbing. I hope that they have learned that there are stakeholders who need to be placated, or at least to be educated. "

I wonder who really is to be educated in this instance? Who would be below climbers, given the nature of the cliffline on north head...

Exactly!

The original Sydney Harbour forum website sought the public’s views on what activities should, or should not be allowed in the National Park.

According to statistics given on the new forum the earlier/original website received a total of 333 comments from 149 users and we know that many of those comments (a significant number in fact) argued for a lifting of the prohibition on climbing – particularly in respect of North Head.

Yet, when the Draft Plan of Management was released in December last year it retained (regurgitated?) the old tired arguments given in the 1998 Plan to justify the original ban on climbing.

Are they listening? Have your say!

It would be easy to believe that to some in the NSW Parks organisation nobody ranks below climbers. ;-)
